What do you get when you combine trumpet, upright bass, tambura, global percussion (tupan drum, derbekki, riqq), and vocals? It’s the Broken Shadows Family Band, brought together by trumpeter, composer, singer Darren Johnston (The Nice Guy Trio, Cylinder, Meklit Hadero, Brass Menazeri, The Gonifs). And since their “internationalist folk songs” can’t be pigeonholed, you’ll just have to tune in at 10 p.m. to hear it for yourself. (They’ll likely add violin for their Friday concert at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco.) In the second hour of the show, Derk Richardson pays tribute to the late John Fahey (who would be turning 75 on Feb. 28), preview a bit of this weekend’s Other Minds festival at the SFJAZZ Center, and give away some tickets to see the Pat Metheny Unity Band.
