Voices of the Middle East and North Africa – October 6, 2004

In tonight’s program we featured excerpts from a unique CD, “After the Last Sky: A Mosaic of Palestinian Poetry and Music” created and recorded by Duo Doloroso. Named after a phrase penned by Mahmoud Darwish, the CD “After the Last Sky” treats the listener to readings of Poetry of Resistance and Freedom by eleven Palestinian poets including Fadwa Tuqan, Fawaz Turki, Leila Alloush, and Samih al-Qasim. Poems are interspersed with a beautiful selection of Palestinian vocal and instrumental music, including the rarely-heard oud playing of Samir Joubran from Palestine, and the powerful singing of Reem Kelani. Poems are preceded by an introductory biography of the poet, providing valuable context and background. Visit the website of Duo Doloroso: http://doloroso.ramallahonline.com/, or contact them at: [email protected]. We featured as a form of cultural resistance against obliteration and extinction in a week when the intensifying massacres in Gaza by Israel have claimed over 90 Palestinian lives in the past week, including some 26 children.
