Voices of the Middle East and North Africa - August 9, 2006

Four weeks ago, the U.S. funded and armed Israeli military launched a full-scale war against Lebanon, its infrastructure, its social fabric and its people. On this week's program, Dr. Azmi Beshara will be in conversation with Dr. Samara Esmeir about the destructive political operations of the war, the alignments within Israel that gave birth to this war, the regional and the global state of affairs enabling it, the political meanings of various forms of violence, as well as their relation to the U.S. projects of "democracy" in the Middle East, Israel's history in the region and practices of resistance. Azmi Beshara is a member of the Israeli Parliament, on behalf of the Palestinian party, the National Democratic Assembly, and a former Professor of Philosophy at Bir Zeit University in the West Bank.

Later in the program, Coptic poet and educator Matthew Shenoda will recite "State of Siege", a poem by the Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish, one of the most prominent contemporary poets in the Arab world. Mahmoud Darwish is known to be the poetic voice of the Palestinian people.

Under siege, time becomes space
Petrified in its eternity
Under siege, space becomes time
That ! missed its yesterday and its tomorrow
