Join Co-hosts Malihe and Khalil on this week’s program where, as part of our series on the History of the Berbers or Amazighe people, we will hear interviews with two prominent Algerian Berber leaders from the heart of Kabylia Mountains. Dr. Said Saadi, head of the Rally for Culture and Democracy party and one of six candidates for president, and Belaid Abrika, the leader of the Citizens’ Movement in Kabylia, will both give us their take on the legitimacy of the April 8, 2004 presidential election in Algeria, the current state of the country, and the issue of Berber cultural rights.
Later in the program, we will hear an interview with Firoozeh Dumas, the author of Funny in Farsi: a Memoir of Growing up Iranian in America. When she was seven years old, Firoozeh’s family moved from Iran to Southern California with no knowledge of the United States beyond her father’s memories of his graduate school years in Texas. Her book chronicles the hilarious and true misadventures of Firoozeh and her family’s life in the U.S. Funny in Farsi has been characterized as an unforgettable story of identity, discovery, and the power of family love.
