Thanks for getting the show up, thought-provoking must-hear radio, as usual...
oh and
Talking about the difference between 'economics studies' then - 60 years ago, about - and now, that the gentler examinations are gone, the extreme allowances of present day robbery and mayhem that are capitalism today are de rigeuer analysis: Yes. Our Owners have capitalised on our permission - well - it's like the frog in the pot of cold water -
They start their analysis from what we're early taught is a reasonable place, and then they advance more and more quickly to this heinous increasing attack on us. But it had to come from that place that seemed reasonable - certainly, by comparison.
Think Hitler, re 'the economy'. Parenti likely lists the other extremists in history... I'm not a scholar - don't know stuff.
This conversation rationalizes under the rubric that capitalism has merit - not the merit that Marx identifies, but the kind of merit that has us talk about economics as though it's natural. Kept sub rosa is that economics is part of the wholly trinity, inseparable: social, political, economic. It is eminently controllable by us, as is evident from its service to the Owning class.
Had we control of our lives as the dictatorship of the proletariat, eradicating competition - which this discussion just accepts as natural, usual, unchallengeable, we could eradicate profit, benefiting us all in gentle care of Earth.
Those are principles that directly contradict the extensive and elaborately languaged, status conferring studies by Galbraith and all the 'classical' 'economists' - except of course Marx and his fellows.
Creating a body of study, in this case, economics and the concomitant rationalizing of capitalism, is like creating any other commodity. These people who formulate and 'sell' it - teach, gain reknown and recognition for selling it, and profit thereby.
This is what happens when we are deprived our media. Revolution!
same problem at 1:37 p.m. today, Saturday.

Why does the 9-10 segment play properly on Sat. 7-23-11 but Doug Henwood's 10-11 segment give an error? The download for the mp3 and the m3u file produces the "error opening file" error. You also get the same error when trying to play the file from the webpage. Do you have someone different recording the 9-10 segment or is Doug Henwood being censored?
The doug henwood show isn't opening from the KPFA archive. "error opening file." other archives work, so it's at the KPFA end...
