Glad to see at least someone questions Ms Kieth. Contempt for education? Trying to create distinctions between liberals and radicals that do not exist outside of here self created divisions. concentrating on destroroying the culture before we try to build a new one? How many might actually die within such a scenario?.
She tries to create something very complex but nonetheless seems hoplessly naive; A small groups of radicals is going to use the tactic of property destruction to bring the corporate juggernaut to a stop. Really? Maybe the simple minded dramatic effect attracts some, but some of the rest of us find it ridiculous
Others at this event were even more ridiculous with Stephanie McMillan showing a picture of a gun to start her presentation. Personally i left the event and went across the bay to the green festival to the green festival at that point.
I consider myself very much a radical, but to limit the usage of that word to those who wish to only use a strategy of violence is wrongheaded to me
"I consider myself very much a radical, but to limit the usage of that word to those who wish to only use a strategy of violence is wrongheaded to me"
funny, i find strawman arguments such as yours wrongheaded. when does she EVER say that we should ONLY use "a strategy of violence?" when does she ever even imply that? it is disrespectful and flippant to put words -- let alone entire arguments -- in her mouth which she never conveyed.
violent self-defense is a tactic within a larger strategy of resistance. her argument is that it can be effective, and to that extent, should be given serious consideration and utilized where necessary and beneficial. it's pretty straightforward, sound logic.
maybe you should stop considering yourself "very much a radical" until you can obtain and sustain some intellectual and emotional honesty...just a suggestion.
Spell-bound is the word. She has amazing verbal skills and grasp of the mega-view of history.
Thank you for airing this.
You know, I listened to her talk wondering why? Why give it at all? In the end I think it
must satisfy a kind of fantasy for her. She wants very much to tilt at windmills, or for some
idealized 2% to tilt at them at any rate.
Thanks for airing this.
Please develop this discussion further.
Horizontal hostility -- like finding "those people" (liberals) insufferable? Nevertheless an excellent talk by Lierre Keith.
It is important to hear from people who see things in black and white, they provide direction. But it is equally important to not be limited to those two colors. The excellence in this talk is that Keith sees that as well, by saying their are many levels to resistance -- changing one's self is simply the beginning, change cannot end there.
Thank you KPFA especially Flashpoints last night and Morning Mix for bringing some Earth at Risk talks to the airwaves.
I totally agree. I was spellbound and really want to hear more of the Earth at Risk talks. Will look for them in the archives. And, thank you for getting them on the air.
