Thanks so much for Sarah Vall. I am so glad she went to the Iolani Palace and that sparked her to write Unfamiliar Fishes. She got it right. Hopefully she will spark others to check out the palace when in Honolulu and perhaps become more acquainted with what happened there; not too different from what is continuing to happen for many of the same reasons. Something I find most interesting in the story of the American domination of Hawaii is that Hawaii had many citizens as a sovereign nation. Not all of them were ethnic Hawaiians. There is a registry of people who signed Lili'uokalani's petition to restore her and the Hawaiian Kingdom. It was "lost" for many years, but has been found recently. 40,000 Hawaiian citizens signed it. Now descendents of those citizens continue to add their names and in front of the Iolani Palace they place white signs for the ancestors and for the current family members. On one side is the name and on the other says "No Treaty of Annexation". It's pretty impressive when you see the entire lawn of the right side of the palace grounds covered with these signs. I'm not computer savy enough to know how to send a photo of this, but it's pretty amazing.
