The California State Prison Hunger Strike Special

The California Prison Hunger Strike Special will explore the significance as well as impact of the largest hunger strike in California Penal history.  The Statewide Hunger Strike began July 8th, 2013 when over 30,000 prisoners of all backgrounds stopped eating their daily meals.

In part 1, of this 2 part series, former prisoner and activist, Manuel La Fontaine, in conversation with Minister of Information, JR Valrey, describes the horrific conditions endured by prisoners in security housing units known as “the SHU”.

Dr. Marc Sapir, a Primary Care physician and member of Mad As Hell Doctors, defines the supportive role of health  professionals in monitoring the care of prisoners, in general, and the specific care of prisoners participating in the Hunger Strike.
