On this edition of From the Vault we turn the clock back to 1993 when Pacifica Radio devoted an entire day to recognize Black August, the annual commemoration of the liberation struggles of Africans Americans that began with the killing of prisoner George Jackson on August 21, 1971.

I think the editing job was well done in providing highlights of the 4-hour special first aired on KPFA in August of 1993; although I wish the voices of Ruchell Cinque Magee (now 50 years in prison) and Hugo Pinell (43 in solitary, the last 23 in Pelican Bay SHU) had been included. Nevertheless, it was a good condensation. However, I have a problem with no credit being given to the original producer, engineer, station, host, or narrators. This program was a long, difficult labor of love by all involved who spent countless hours in KPFA studios (often into the wee hours) weeks in advance, not to mention the transcriptions, script production/run sheets, pre-recordings of artists in studio, etc. At least the producer, host and chief engineer should have been mentioned. I.e., Dina Nyasha Smith, Kent Yeglin (engineer extraordinaire!), and yours truly. The irony here is that had we been contracted and paid, such an appropriation most likely wouldn't have occurred. Of course, there's one more irony herein: My former name, Pat Gallyot (until 1975 & '79) was mentioned by George in the segment you selected. That name, along with June and David [Hilliard], was omitted from the transcript of the Wald interview that's showing up on the net these days.
A small correction, Karen Wald was not the interviewer of Georgia Jackson, only George.
