When I graduated in the

When I graduated in the winter of 1990, I looked for work in Silicon Valley and found slim pickings. A couple years later I moved to Concord, gave up on Silicon Valley, and found work in Concord and Walnut Creek. I was "trailer trash" for quite a while, until one of my jobs gave me enough of a raise to qualify for a $150k mortgage. When I looked into where you could get a house for that much, it was basically North Richmond or Bay Point. As Bay Point was near where we already were and not right on top of a refinery, that is where I went. Now lately I am looking for a little bigger place and being told that $300k will get you a dump in Pacheco, Pleasant Hill or Martinez. Don't even ask about Walnut Creek where I now work or the nicer parts of Concord. So I am looking at Antioch now. You speak of the "urban core", but in terms of good jobs, my core has always been Central Contra Costa.
