Against the Grain

It's an argument widely accepted within, and forcefully promoted by, feminist and queer circles: Gender and sexuality are socially constructed; they are the product of only socialization and social norms. Julia Serano believes this crucially ignores the role played by biology. She forwards what she calls a holistic model of gender and sexuality.

This is an important

This is an important disscussion to have. There needs to be a critique of gender determinism and an understanding of the problems with social construction theory. However, i find Julia's analysis of this lacking. She presents a simplistic picture of social constructionist theory as completely anti biology and presents a simplistic picture of biology as not problematic and limited. she never provides a good critique of biology and empiricism which is riddled with gendered projections or how we would know what is our natural gender given that socialization exists. She never gets to explaining what sexism does create in terms of gender and what gender would look like in an sexist world and seems too easily accept that gender stereotypes are just individual desires. she seems to replicate what she is critiquing. simplistic analysis. but good to have this discussion anyhow.

Great show. It is a very

Great show. It is a very promising development in reversing the anti-science trend in some previous Against the Grain programs like one featuring the discredited Steven Rose (and also Up Front's Sonali Kolhatkar interview with Jim Horgan), and a positive step in embracing science and engendering scientific literacy that we on the left really need. Thanks C.S. and keep the good shows coming. Against the Grain is one of the best shows on the radio.
