RELEVATE! A Social Impact Film Forum - Friday, November 15, 2013 at 6 PM and Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 5 PM

Date of the Event:
Friday, November 15, 2013 - 6:00pm - Saturday, November 16, 2013 - 5:00pm

Compathos Foundation presents: the Social Impact Film Festival and RELEVATE Film Forum on November 15 – 16, 2013 at The New Parkway Theater in Oakland, CA

The forum brings together cultural creatives, social innovators and community leaders to deepen the understanding of subjects of relevance to Bay Area residents. Through storytelling and expert panel discussions, Compathos’, in collaboration with its partners, ignites cross-cultural understanding and sparks inter-generational conversations that inspire social action, global citizenry and world transformation.

The festival’s inspirational theme, New Worlds are Possible, is wholly demonstrated through award-winning documentaries and non-fictional shorts by filmmakers and young, Oakland-based media artists, who are dedicated to producing work on current events and controversial subject matters, such as human rights, immigration, crime and violence, environmental and related heath issues and social injustice.

Cynthia La Grou, Executive Director of Compathos Foundation, states that “the foundation’s objective is to champion and promote the stories of independent filmmakers, activists and grassroots change-makers that too often remain overlooked, and to serve as a springboard for creative media that exemplifies excellence in its potential to inspire change.”

Compathos’ partners include: the Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA), an annual international documentary and educational impact media competition and showcase, which honors members in the independent film and global humanitarian industry; Youth Seed and United Roots are two Oakland based non-profits working together to support the development of community led multi-media social enterprises owned and operated by young, under-served innovators, who face barriers to economic opportunities. Youth Seed and United Roots Oakland recently create their own media production company, Simphony Productions to produce documentaryb shorts on local subject matters of economic and social disparity.

For more information about Compathos’ RELEVATE! A Social Impact Film Forum and to purchase tickets log on to events.compathos.com

Ticket proceeds benefit Compathos’ Youth Media Travel Abroad Program, which gives local media students and young professionals an exciting opportunity to broaden their communications skills while producing socially responsible media that promotes cross-cultural understanding and provides support to developing communities. Compathos Foundation is a nonprofit media production, education and research organization harnessing the power of the arts and media to inspire transformation, global citizenry and social action.
