Ensemble Mik Nawooj (EMN) performs the innovative music of composer/pianist JooWan Kim, who injects Western European Classical compositional techniques into such genres as hip-hop, rock, & pop. EMN’s current line up includes the usual Pierrot ensemble instrumentation (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano) with a lyric soprano, deep funk drums, a heavy contrabass, and two featured MCs. JooWan calls the music he writes for Ensemble Mik Nawooj, “Hybrid Music” and believes that “hybridization” has been the force that shaped radical changes in music history since Debussy.
Kim is a classically trained (but not classical) composer who holds degrees from Berklee College of Music (BM, summa cum laude, in composition) and San Francisco Conservatory of Music (MM in composition).
