A beloved patriarch of Latin music known for transforming dance orchestras into roiling sonic laboratories, Nuyorican pianist/composer Eddie Palmieri has been at the cutting edge of Afro-Caribbean music since the early 1960s. After his two-year gig with the great Tito Rodríguez culminated in the classic 1960 album Live at the Palladium, Palmieri set out to revolutionize the dance orchestra with his legendary trombone-powered ensemble La Perfecta. From 1965’s foundational salsa anthem “Azúcar” to the politically and rhythmically charged 1971 album Vámonos Pa'l Monte to 1975’s iconoclastic The Sun Of Latin Music, Palmieri has fearlessly combined tropical grooves with hard-bop harmonies and McCoy Tyner pianistics.  His Salsa Big Band will feature the creme de la creme of great players including tres legend Nelson Gonzalez, trombonist extraordinare Jimmy Bosch, bongosero Anthony Carillo and star vocalist Herman Olivera.  This is part of Palmieri's 3 day residency that will feature his Latin Jazz Septet with special guests New Orleans alto sax great Donald Harrison and baritone sax master Ronnie Cuber on Friday, Nov. 29.  Palmieri's Latin Jazz Septet returns on Sunday, Dec. 1st featuring Cuban violin virtuoso Alfredo De La Fe who joined Palmieri's orchestra back in the 1970's at the age of 18 and acclaimed vibraphonist Joe Locke.  .  For more ticket and event information, please visit www.sfjazz.org.
