Sunday December 5th Unpaid/Paid Staff Gathering
Colleagues, Friends, Comrades, the paid and unpaid staff, the people who make this station what it is,
We are reaching out to you today because we are going thru a very challenging time here at KPFA and it’s time we come together to discuss ways in which we as a collective body of KPFA can move forward. Struggle isn't anything new to Pacifica or here at KPFA but this one at hand is quite alarming. One that we feel should bring us together rather than keep us divided.
The crisis at hand:
KPFA has recently gone thru a third phase of budget cuts that is grossly affecting the daily operations of KPFA. In the past we’ve survived on a skeleton crew but there are key positions at KPFA that are currently vacant and we are lacking essential guidance and communiqué regarding programming, scheduling, etc. These cuts affects each and everyone of us.
We are currently without a locally produced drive time Morning Show. Pacifica Management is still piping in programs from our sister station at KPFK and our listeners were told this would only last for 10 days: it’s now been three weeks. We feel that this is a great disservice to our listeners and would like some direction in this regard.
Our station is facing several lawsuits.
Our station is financially struggling to stay afloat.
Our November fund drive was canceled, no end of the year appeal is being conducted, and we are scheduled to have a fund drive in 3 weeks - nobody knows if this will still happen and or how we will organize to pull it off.
We know there are several grievances between the paid, unpaid and our entire body that represents KPFA that have further divided us. But we also know that we are united by a common core as well, we hope we can all come together to allow space to voice our differences, develop solutions and strategies on how to move forward and remember why we are here to begin with. That is, to create good radio and keep KPFA strong and relevant to our communities.
Please join us this Sunday- December 5th at 6:30-9pm

We will be joined by Bill Aal co-founder of Toolsforchange.org and his colleague Nell, who will assist us in facilitating this much needed conversation and collective vision for KPFA. We will also need to make a collection to pay for the venue.
We thank you for your time, your work, your passion in keeping our radio station the vital resource it is and hope you will join us.
