Special One Day 17 hourInternational Women's Day Programming,March 28, 2010 5:00 am - 10:00 pm. A 17 hour long broadcast celebrating International Women’s Day with stories, reports, politics and music illuminating women's lives and their progress toward liberation and equality. This will be an opportunity for women at KPFA to promote diversity and give voice to the struggles, aspirations and concerns of women everywhere. We will be celebrating a hundred years of progress! The first IWD was held on February 28 1909 in the USA. And in 1910, the International Socialist Congress in Copenhagen unanimously voted to establish an international women’s day in honor of the movement for women’s rights and to assist the struggle for universal women’s suffrage. During the following year one million people demonstrated world wide, demanding the right of women to vote, to hold public office, vocational training and an end to discrimination. IWD is one hundred years old this year! The history of IWD is an important story in itself. The record and celebration of women's history is vital. Our programs can produce a history of women's movements past and present. 5:00 AM - 8:00 AM "Musical Offering and Opening Ceremony Honoring International Women's Day" An opening ceremony honoring International Women's Day and KPFA's day long celebration of women's programming with music of all kinds, highlighting and celebrating women.
