KPFA News Intensive - Long-form radio journalism

The KPFA News Department is offering an advanced-level Radio Journalism course for people who have graduated from KPFA's news training program, or have equivalent experience (graduating the First Voice Apprenticeship counts), and want to tackle more advanced reporting projects. Topics include:

  • Conceptualizing planning long-term reporting projects
  • Making public records requests and using publicly-available databases
  • Covering state politics
  • Organizing research and interviews
  • Narrative style in longer stories
  • Advanced digital editing/how to use sound creatively
  • How to pitch freelance work

This is a seminar-format course with about half devoted to peer workshopping and some one-on-one edits with instructor. Assignments will emphasize environmental justice issues, but participants will develop their own stories as well. Be prepared to spend 8-10 hours per week on assignments for the duration of the course. Participants' work will air on the KPFA Evening News and other KPFA programs. Participants are welcome, and encouraged, to pitch work done for this class to national media outlets.

Classes run from 7:30 PM to 10:PM on Monday  nights from February 8th through June 21st . The course is free. There are a limited number of slots available by competitive application.
