APEX Express is a weekly magazine-style radio show featuring the voices and stories of Asians and Pacific Islanders from all corners of our community. The show is produced by a collective of media makers, djs, and activists and airs each week on KPFA 94.1FM.
APEX Express is committed to building a broader social movement for justice and collective liberation for all oppressed people, including poor & working-class people, people of color, women and queer people. We support grassroots organizing and cultural work that advance these goals, and see APEX as a space for building consciousness and promoting critical discussion about these efforts.
As part of KPFA, we are committed to promoting independent community media that is free and accessible to everyone.
We work collectively to share our skills and resources, and to build the capacity and confidence of community members to tell their own stories. Within our group, we prioritize maintaining a culture of mutual support, respect, and love.

Behind the News covers the worlds of economics and politics and their complex interactions, from the local to the global. Shows typically consist of some opening comments by host Doug Henwood on the recent news, followed by two or three interviews with authors, activists, academics, and other knowledgeable sorts. Since mystification is one of the tricks that power uses to maintain itself, emphasis is always placed on clarifying the complex.
Topics covered include the broad economy and the financial markets, trade and globalization, income distribution and poverty, political candidates (with an emphasis on their general bogosity), Latin American resistance to neoliberalism, crime and imprisonment, financing health care, environmental economics, and the culture of money. Of course, that list will evolve as circumstances warrant.

Host/producer profile
Doug Henwood has been hosting Behind the News since 1996; his radio career began in 1989, with commentaries delivered on the late and deeply missed Samori Marksman's show. His day job is as a writer and editor. He edits Left Business Observer, a newsletter he founded in 1986, and is a contributing editor of The Nation. He is the author of three books - The State of the USA Atlas (1994), Wall Street (1997), and After the New Economy (2004). He's at work on a study of the American ruling class, whoever that might be.

Dead to the World began life on KPFA as the Grateful Dead Hour. When host David Gans was offered a second hour in 1995, he agreed on the condition that he be allowed to play non-Dead music as well. "No problem," said the management, and so Dead to the World was born.
The general scheme of the show is Grateful Dead and Dead-related music in the first hour, followed by an eclectic mix of music that focuses on great songwriting – usually in the general realms of "folk," "Americana," and "jamband" music. But anything can happen! We are privileged to be able to present live performances from the control room or the Performance studio (with special thanks to Tony Ferro, our volunteer engineer, who makes it sound great on the air and in the studio).
When David is on the road, you'll almost always hear Tim Lynch guest-hosting the show. "Tim's tastes in music are similar to mine, but different enough that I feel the listeners are very well served," says David.

“Sing Out” is a showcase of the world’s ever-changing musical realm, hosted since 1989 by Larry Kelp. It was launched in 1974 by David Dunaway, author of the acclaimed Pete Seeger biography, “How Can I Keep from Singing.” The show’s theme song, “A Place in the Choir,” illuminates a disparate group of critters who come together harmoniously through music. The show attempts the same feat with a diverse array of recordings from Classical to the Clash, and live performers who have included Pharoah Sanders, Charles Brown, Iris DeMent, Dar Williams, ROVA Saxophone Quartet, Grupo Raiz, Los Cenzontles, Patricia Barber, Fred Frith, and dozens more.
A live public affairs program focusing on investigating and analyzing environmental issues from a global perspective. Our hope is both to bring key international perspectives to listeners, as well as make the issues relevant to northern California listeners.

Bonnie has been programming her mix of singer/songwriter folk, rock, soul, country, and R&B on KPFA since the late 1980’s. One of the best loved personalities of Bay Area music radio, she was raised in New York, and then moved to San Francisco from Denver in 1968 and became a pioneer of free form radio.
During her eight years, from 1970 to 1978, at the legendary KSAN, she was program music director and disc jockey.
After leaving KSAN, she worked at Warner Bros, promoting Prince as well as the first Dire Straits and Rickie Lee Jones albums, amongst others, and also worked at Hightone Records. She moved in and out of radio at KFOG, LIVE 105, KOFY-FM, KVRE, KDBK “Double 99” and KUSF.
As the Audio Director for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she created the disc jockey audio exhibit and many of the exhibits involving sound at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.
On a local level, Bonnie spent several years working as a sandwich-maker at Ozzie's Soda Fountain in Berkeley, and currently hosts her eclectic weekly show on KPFA.
Bonnie managed the band Cake for eight years, and represented Noe Venable and Etienne de Rocher for many years. For the past nine years she has spent a lot of her time working on the three day free music festival in Golden Gate Park, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and currently serves as the Executive Director for the Bill Graham Foundation.
