Fighting Forest Fires in the American West: The Needs of Nature Versus the Needs of Man – September 6, 2013

During the last three weeks the Rim Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park has burned its way into the history books. The Rim Fire has scorched 370 square miles of forest, cost $60 million in state and federal funds, and involved more than 5,100 fire-fighting personnel.

Are we managing wildfires, like the Rim Fire, appropriately for the health of forests, the safety of residents and firefighters, and fiscal responsibility?

To help answer those questions, join Terra Verde in a discussion with two experts on the ecology and politics of wildfires. Chad Hanson is co-director of the John Muir Project, and Michael Kodas is the Associate Director of the Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado in Boulder and is currently writing and photographing a book about the global wildfire crisis.
